During the summer months, diarrhea can become a common problem for many people. The reason for this is that high temperatures can quickly contaminate food and water, leading to an increase in diarrhea cases during this season.

When poor quality water is consumed, the micro-organisms it contains can enter the body and increase the risk of cholera. Nowadays, many people rely on purchased water for their daily needs, such as for drinking at home, school, work, or restaurants. However, the quality of this water may be questionable at times, which can lead to diarrhea for many individuals.

Some of the primary causes of diarrhea include using spoiled or rotten food in cooking, eating excessive amounts of oily or fatty food, consuming contaminated water or improperly cleaned food, and eating a mix of various foods at once. Similarly, if someone fails to wash their hands properly before eating, there is a higher chance of developing diarrhea.

If someone experiences diarrhea, there are some home remedies they can try, such as drinking plenty of clean water, eating easily digestible food in small quantities, avoiding junk food, and maintaining good personal hygiene. However, it is crucial to consult a doctor before taking any medication for diarrhea.

In some cases, it is necessary to seek medical attention. If diarrhea persists even after two or three days of home treatment, if the stool is too thin, if vomiting is continuous, if there is diarrhea every hour, if someone is unable to drink water even when they are thirsty, if there is a fever, if the blood pressure is low, or if there is blood in the stool, it is recommended to go to the hospital.

To prevent diarrhea, people should filter or boil water from the tap or jar before drinking it. Alternatively, they can add Piyush to the water, a popular beverage in India made with buttermilk and spices. Eating plain foods like vegetables, pulses, bananas, fish, fruit juices, tea without milk, and plain water can also help prevent diarrhea.

There is a common misconception that people should avoid drinking water during diarrhea. However, it is crucial to stay hydrated and replenish the salts and nutrients lost due to diarrhea by making and consuming a rehydration solution.
