The Spanish club Real Madrid defeated the English club Chelsea in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
Real won a comfortable 2-0 victory over Chelsea, which consisted of 10 players, at home. Real’s victory was scored by captain Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio.
Real managed to take a 1-0 lead with Benzema’s goal in the 21st minute of Wednesday night’s match at the Santiago Bernabeu. He managed to score a pass from Vinicius Junior.
Trailing 1-0 in the first half, the visiting team Chelsea was reduced to 10 players at the beginning of the second half and faced further problems. In the 59th minute, Ben Chilwell got a straight red card and left the field.
In the 74th minute, substitute Marco Asensio scored to give Real a 2-0 win. Asensio, who entered the field in place of Rodrigo in the 71st minute, managed to score a goal from Vini’s pass within four minutes.
With this win, the 14-time champions and former champions Real have strengthened their chances of reaching the semi-finals.
Now, if they can maintain this result in the match to be held at Chelsea on April 18, Real will reach the semi-finals. Chelsea needs at least a 3-0 win to reach the semi-finals.
